Photographers - 4 Reasons to Add the Global Bird Fair to Your Diary

The Global Bird Fair, the world's largest annual celebration of birds, is a three day show, exhibition, trade show, primarily aimed at bird enthusiasts held on the south shore of Rutland Water in July.
Whilst the show is predominantly aimed at bird and nature enthusiasts, with lots of travel agents in particular offering nature themed holidays around the world, photographers should be adding it to their diaries, here’s why:

The Global Bird Fair is Also a Mini Photography Show

Alongside the travel and ornithological companies are the top photography brands, Canon, Nikon, Sony, OM Systems etc etc each with a smaller version of their ‘photography show’ stands, including photography specific presentations and talks throughout the day. But because this isn’t a dedicated photography show, the stands are quieter, there’s more space to browse, more time to talk and, because the Fair is based outdoors (stands are in marquees) it’s a better environment to try out cameras and kit.
As well as the big brands, there’s a large number of smaller, specialist photography brands, SpeediGimbal (with whom I was working), camera bags, accessories and associated products and services, again with more space and time than the Photo’ Show.

It’s Full of Inspiration for Photographers

Unless you’re a dedicated, studio based photographer you’re going to discover new places to explore, from destinations and subjects in the Uk to traditional safaris and more challenging adventures across the world. With a wide range of suppliers and products you’ll even learn how to attract more wildlife into your own garden and how to find it in local area.
The Fair is surrounded by a range of stages hosting a full program of talks and presentations throughout each day. A full schedule is published in advance so you can plan your day(s).

The Location is Surrounded by Photography Opportunities

Let’s be honest, the East Midlands don’t play host to many top quality photography shows, London and even a more central Birmingham destination are quite a trek! It’s refreshing therefore to have such a significant event here.
Rutland of course is the big draw, not just the reservoir, the surrounding countryside and villages are well worth discovering as a photographer, and I’d recommend making a weekend of your visit.
Camp on-site or stay nearby (Oakham is a great choice with independent shops, restaurants and accommodation) to combine your visit with exploring the local area.
Wildlife photographers will be drawn to Rutland Water, Fair attendees were treated to early morning visits from Ospreys, Otters and Barn Owls literally a short walk from the main Fair site. The south shore of Rutland Water also offers landscape photographers lots of opportunities with stunning views across the reservoir and the iconic Normanton Church.
Other attendees combined their visit with trips to the adjacent nature reserves, bird watching centre and even an Osprey cruise.

The Fair is a Great Day Out for Everyone

Whether you’re shopping for a new camera, seeking out your next destination or just looking for inspiration there’s plenty going on over a spacious site with good access. A large, covered seating area incorporating numerous vendors offering a wide choice of food is a great space to catch your breath between talks and presentations, making the Global Bird Fair a great day out.

The 2025 Global Bird Fair was held between the 11th and 13th July, go to the their website to find details of the 2026 Fair and but tickets.
